Cover Letter
Definition
A cover letter, sent in the mail to a prospective employer, summarizes why you are
the right candi- date for a particular position. It should make the reader want to
move on to the enclosed resume. Additionally, it introduces transferable abilities
not mentioned in your resume as well as answering the “will this person fit into
the group” question employers must consider. Finally, it includes a call to action,
asking the employer to schedule you for an interview.
Intent
The cover letter, written in first person, allows your personality to show through.
It subtly influences how the resume is read, and if the hiring manager has someone
else open the mail, it compels that assistant to pass your documents on to the decision-maker.
Employer’s Perspective
The cover letter is the first, best way to capture the employer’s attention. If
it does not, chances are the employer will not waste time scheduling an interview.
Warning:
Grammar or spelling errors in the cover letter – the very first contact with an
employer – will destroy credibility. Errors imply a lack of attention to detail
and a lackadaisical attitude.
