Cover Letter Defined
|
|
|
|
Approximately 33% of all hiring managers will disqualify a candidate if a cover
letter does not accom-
pany the resume. Is it worth the risk?
|
|
|
|
Cover letters are an opportunity to indicate skills and background in a personalized
way. For a few
moments, you have control of the content, pace, and focus. Research the target company
and job
position and find key words and phrases to incorporate into your letters. It is
recommended your
cover letter consist of three or four paragraphs. Each paragraph will be written
error-free and will be
in alliance with the job posting. Sending out a template cover letter is not in
your best interest.
|
|
|
|
The initial paragraphs introduce the reader to who you are by responding to the
overall question:
“Why are you writing me and who are you?” Use the first paragraph to explain why
you are the right
candidate based upon company needs. The second paragraph hones into your skills
and qualifica-
tions. Use this area to sell your education and unique value. The third paragraph
examines specifics
as to why you are the right person for the job and company. In this phase, highlight
your research by
using key words from the company’s mission statement or from the job description.
The final para-
graph is a call for action. At this time, the goal is to have the reader pick up
the phone and request an
interview.

|
Preparation is the key. Tailor each cover letter to each job description and company.
In other words,
one cover letter does not fit all positions.
