Resume Designs have Changed

Using old resume formats (functional, chronological) can date you - even using popular word pro-
cessing templates can date you and make you look like you won’t take the time to do something
original. Besides, who wants to use that old resume wizard that everybody can use and takes up
tons of white space, leaving even less room for your greatest college accomplishment and important
projects? Designs are not supposed to be a few samples of “stock” styles for you to choose from,
rather, they should be creative and designed to leverage your most appealing job qualifications.

In the not too distant past, putting a 1½” x 2” headshot in the top corner of the resume was popular!
You wouldn’t believe how many professionals still take part in this outdated practice - yes, profes-
sionals. What a throwback to the 80’s! Since we’ve passed that design trend by a couple of
decades, we now include things like links to online portfolios - this is another great addition to the
heading of a resume for a creative professional. Online portfolios can be much more informative
and contain multiple samples and testimonials of your work. There’s another thought - incorporate a
quote from a professor or supervisor!
