Proof in the Pudding

Tom Cruise’s “show me the money” has become a truism; people from all over the world and all
walks of life are using it. Let’s examine why, and specifically why it’s become the watchword of
hiring executives.

Not too many years ago, job seekers could get away with claims of unparalleled achievements. But
as the cost of training continues to rise, the value of a good hire – or the cost of a bad one – has
become more evident. For this reason, employers want YOU to prove YOUR value before they hire
you, not after. By developing an achievement-centered portfolio you show employers the money…
in other words, you demonstrate the positive effect you will have on the employer’s bottom line.

Your documents set the tone and determine whether or not you are a good hire. They are your
opportunity to display past achievements and provide verifiable evidence to support claims you
make about your skills, experience, and attributes. This information, in turn, enables employers to
accurately assess the benefits you bring to the organization.

Given the importance of the portfolio, it is vital you do not diminish your value in any way—prove you
are the best candidate by featuring your knowledge, motivation, and initiative. It is not humility to
downplay your abilities; a well-positioned portfolio is not about you, it is about what you can do for
your employer. Presenting a “humble” portfolio does not accurately give the employer what is
required to make an informed decision.

Tom Cruise struck a fundamental truth: Telling me you have the money is never as credible or
impressive as showing me the money.
