Speaking Without Saying a Word

Interview settings provide the content to evaluate verbal communication and nonverbal
communication
directly. How one behaves in these settings are signatures as to what can be anticipated
if hired.
Therefore, it is imperative to know how powerful nonverbal communication truly is.
People tend to
believe what is seen more than what is heard. As a result, the “show” me visually
must not conflict with
the “tell” me verbiage. Mixed messages crumble credibility; but what are some of
the defining elements
of nonverbal communication?

Everything from what is worn to how we walk, the manner in which we talk (tone, word choice, hesitations, etc.), to the way we look at the interviewer.

|
Facial expressions affect greatly; that is why it is strongly recommended to record a mock interview and then conduct an objective review—have a peer offer suggestions as well. Warning, most people are surprised at the latent messages relayed.

|
Body language does not lie and is often a tattler since is it more spontaneous and less controlled.
|

•
|
Scary stares, you’ve seen them and probably initiated one or two. One way to create an uncomfortable interview is to stare blankly at the person sitting across the table. In a word, don’t.
