Bank Of Hawaii Careers

Carol Said:

Moving To Hawaii finding a job?

We Answered:

Well, just like the rest of America, the unemployment rate is up in Hawaii. Many people are being laid off and are out of work. Many local families have each member of the family working 2 jobs, just so they can afford the rent to their small 2 bedroom house.

Everything is expensive here. I make over $5,000 as a microbiologist here, and the government take away almost $2,000 of that for taxes each month. Damn crooks, I tell ya! I want to go out and party like I use to when I was in America, where I only paid $500 a month for taxes.

It is hard to get a job. Sure you can make 1500-2000 easy here, but that's if you can find a job. Not much people are hiring, especially in the business sector.

I am lucky, I work at a hospital laboratory. I work with bacteria and viruses all day, life is good.

Why go to grad school? let the government pay your school, and live of of financial aid and student loans? a lot of people are doing that, since employment is so hard to get nowadays.

anyways good luck

Banking Jobs in Hawaii?

We Answered:

1) Hawaii being a small and secluded state have a few banks availiable. Here is a list of some of the top major banks operating in Hawaii,

1-BOH (Bank of Hawaii)
2-First Hawaiian Bank
3-American Savings Bank

According to boh.com, Bank of Hawaii was rated number one amongst 18 other banks, I have followed their stocks and BOH have been stable if not rising steadily in the Stock Market. And having only a few banks to choose from(not much investments from locals and small businesses in huge companies e.g. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan&Chase, i would believe), BOH is stable, not sure about the rest but I would presume are also stable.

2.) Economy is worse if not the same across the country. Tourism is our largest form of income(period..) and with not much money going around, less tourist are targeting Hawaii as a travel destination inturn less investments in banks.
example of the economy: Although gas prices are at an all time low right low, the news from 6 months ago with Hawaii having nearly 5 bucks to the gallon didn't offer much help. A lot of people in the hotel industry and relatives in the pineapple/sugar cane industry lost jobs because of the decline in our economy.
But for 'Banking Jobs in Hawaii' did not take a direct blow and with a College Degree, there would be no problem for you to get a job, you just have to stand/learn the broken english with the locals..hehe.

hope this is very informational..

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

We Answered:

You need to decide what is best for you and your family. In my opinion there is never really a great time financially to add a new baby. If you and your husband are ready for a new baby, go for it. As for preschool for your other child, if you are going to stay home anyway home school. I was am now in a similar situation. I am a teacher and had worked at my current school for two years. I have a three year old daughter. I was in the process of completing my master's degree and decided it would be the perfect time for a second baby. Three months later I was pregnant and super excited. My principle was not so excited and felt that I was more focused on my family instead of my career (duh) and asked me to resign. So here I was finishing out my contract with a baby due in May and no new teaching jobs on the horizon in my area. Well to make a long story shorter, I am now staying home with my two beautiful children. I am not sending my new baby to daycare everyday and am spending quality time doing preschool with my daughter. I am loving every second of it. We have had to make some financial sacrifices for me to stay home with our children for a year, but my husband and I both felt that it is worth it. Next year I will worry about getting my career back on track.

moving to hawaii for 4 5 months?

We Answered:

Sounds like a bad idea to me - tourism is down, so hotels won't be looking for more help.
People always talk about "enjoying the simple life" but rarely enjoy being hungry and homeless.

If you plan on coming for only a few months, better to be prepared with store of cash to lean on while you are here. Don't show up broke and expect to survive.
