Melanie Said:

Do Barack Obama and the Democrats have the interests of the working-class majority at heart?

We Answered:

I think you're 98% correct.

However, as a Marxist myself, I do think there are divisions within the capitalist economic & political elite that dominates American politics.

Obviously, whoever wins the backing of Wall Street and the oil companies etc. is going to need to follow policies that keeps business satisfied.

However, there are crueler and kinder members of the ruling class, smarter and dumber members of the elite, more competent and less competent capitalist politicians -- even though everyone is ultimately serving the "system."

So I do think that Obama and the Democrats, at least in 2008, represented the kinder and smarter capitalist rulers, while Bush & Cheney & McCain & Palin represented the crueler and dumber ones.

But have Obama & the Democrats really done much to help the average working person while reining in Wall Street's abuses?

No.

A big question, still remaining to be answered, is whether Obama & the Democrats have even pushed through enough "reforms" to make the financial system function well for the capitalists.
=======================

BTW - If you call yourself a Marxist, you should recognize that it's possible for invidual capitalist politicians to be "reformers" when they're not really mavericks, much less revolutionaries.

Any given capitalist politician may favor genuine reforms in the system to make it work better for the rich people and the corporations -- or for the military, say. Any given capitalist politician may also favor reforms that are designed to head off dangerous levels of popular unrest.

Also different capitalist politicians serving basically the same elite interests may still choose different "reform" paths to reach those goals. None of these politicians will be revolutionaries, none of them will want to go beyond "reforms" to structural changes - but they may have genuine differences about reform.

Think of Democrats and Republicans representing rival candidates to be managers of a pro football team, say.

Obviously, whoever's hired to be manager of the team will try -- successfully or otherwise -- to get the team to win. Obviously, too, whoever is hired as manager needs to keep the profits from ticket sales & the sale of TV broadcast rights high enough to keep the team owner happy. But one manager may follow one strategy for winning games and maximizing profits, while a second manager may follow a different one.

One manager may be competent, a second manager may not be. Yet the team is still basically a capitalist business, and it's still going to be run to generate profits for the owner, or in some cases to build up the owner's ego.

My husband and I have a major career decision to make and we're just not sure what to do...?

We Answered:

Is your husband incapable of making decisons on his own or does he have to ask you for help??(((Please, i'm not being smart with you))

That's the kind of question he might be asked in applying for a management job with an extremely large corporation.

I started my career with an extremely large company, ( nationally known name) and I hated it.
I then held a series of positions with small, family owned companies, and during that time, I can not remember a Sunday night when i felt, "Oh, hell I have to go to work tomorrow,."
It I were to do it all over, i'd skip the 4 year stint with the nationally known company.

We Answered:

It depends on your financial situation. If you are stressed over finances, perhaps he should take the BofA job, however if you value work-life balance and have/ are planning on having children, it sounds like Amerisource may be the better option. He could also discuss this with the person who offered him the job at Amerisouce and negotiate a higher salary. If they want him badly enough they will raise the salary - Good Luck!
