Texting language is inappropriate on YA ! It doesn't cost more to type full words here and you would make sure non-texting people can understand your question.

How does a 23 year old make a man of himself after 6 years in college?

We Answered:

It took you 5 years to get a liberal arts degree? Why'd you even get that? You claim to be bright but it is known that those degrees are useless for the most part, unless you plan to go to graduate school or further.

No, being your own boss isn't the only way to make it. I don't think doing 'some online thing' is going to make you much, if any money..and just seems like you trying to get something for nothing. Like you said, everyone is doing it..and unless you have some new thing you plan to implement.. I would just pass.

I do think running your own business would be good for you. Just by reading this, I can tell you are someone who wants to do things on your own set schedule. Unfortunately, that will be hard for you to do. I doubt a bank will give you a loan. With the economy the way it currently is, they have got much more strict on who they give them too. For someone with no experience running a business or any education in business, it will be even more difficult.

I don't suggest getting a girl pregnant..heh. I must say I was much the same as you (cept much more bright =P jk) anyways I got a girl pregnant and still didn't 'shape up' for some time.

I just suggest you go out and get a job. I know I felt something like fast food was beneath me, so I'm sure you do as well.. so I won't suggest that. Maybe try to put your information systems degree to good use. You say you can fix computers.. put an ad in the paper offering your services for less than any of your local shops do. You may not be able to do what you want to in life RIGHT NOW..but once you at least get a job and save up some money..then it'll be much easier to follow your own dreams, like starting up a business or whatnot.

Also, since you already have a bachelor's you could go back to school and get a masters. Maybe an MBA to give you some business background. Or whatever you like.. you could get a Masters in Information Systems since you are into that. It's just a couple more years.. and you aren't doing anything else anyways, haha.

How does a 23 year old make a man of himself?

The first step to fixing a problem is to recognize there is one - well done, you have taken the first step which is often a hard one. What's more, you have written down your concerns which is a good way to consolidate them. I must say, on the plus side, you have done this very well which just goes to prove that you have some good communication skills!

So how do you move on?

First of all, don't feel disadvantaged by your position of being "2 years behind". You are still SO young with your whole life ahead of you. You even have the advantage of maturity which the guy 2 years younger than you does not have. In 5 or 10 years, it won't matter.

Second, just do something. It may not be the job you want but you need to get started. So apply for some jobs, even if it is only a part time job initially. It is easier to get a job when you are in a job, so get a job, any job.

Then look for a better job. You seem like an intelligent guy and I do not agree that your degrees have been wasted. Your better job might come from working up the ranks. If you show initiative, reliability and enthusiasm, you will stand out from the crowd and be given further opportunities within the company. If these opportunities do not exist or it is not what you want then you are still more employable.

More importantly, that first job will help you understand business and more about what you might want to do longer term. It will also give you the confidence which you are lacking as well as give you your dignity back.

Once you have your first job, if you really want to work in 'the movies' then look for and apply for jobs connected with the film industry or work in a voluntary capacity in your spare time. You might have to take the lowest paid job making coffee, but if that initiative, enthusiasm and reliability is there, you will get a better job and work your way up. Within a few years you will understand the film industry, have contacts within it and understand what you have to do to get your dream. Or you may decide your dream changes once you have had experience of that industry. But you won't know until you get started and most of the people who work in the film industry all started on the first peg. I have a friend who went to typing school, got a job working for a radio station doing general office work and 10 years later was Producing documentaries for TV.

So get going - make a start and then keep moving forward and in a few years you will look back at this time and see what a good job you did.

How does a 23 year old make a man of himself?

We Answered:

I graduated from college with a BA in Business Admin, which is pretty useless in today's economy and was just as useless four years ago. I worked a full-time job for a little over a year and saved some money. I was living at home, going crazy working an 8 to 5 job, and loathed the post-college social norms.

I said the hell with all of it and took off to South America. I lucked out by having family in Chile, saving some money, having my parents help me, and getting some credit cards. I ended up traveling through South America for a year, learning Spanish and Portuguese, making friends from all of the world, and creating a new bond with my family abroad. Money cannot buy experience. Money can't teach you a second language. I was so ignorant to the world around me, even through out college and after. I was truly a brainwashed ignorant little brat.

You need to LEAVE the country if you want to grow up. You will be forced to learn a new culture, a new language, a new way of life. You will value what you have, the friends and family members that care about you, and respect and cherish other cultures/people/nations. You will return home a new man, full with new ideas and a whole new outlook on life. You are 23 YEARS OLD! If you are ever going to travel, it's going to be now. When you're 35 with a wife and two kids, a mortgage, car payment, and a JOB - do you think you'll be able to leave the country for more than a week? Didn't think so.

I left when I was 22, got back when I was 23. I was working two part-time jobs and going to school for a year. Now, I'm 25 and have a full-time job. I work 9-5 every day, wear a suit to work, and am the happiest person alive. You know why? I practice my Spanish everyday at work, am hoarding cash for my next trip later this year, and could give a **** about the economy because it's going down, down, down, and planning on living a broad 5-10 years down the road. Our nation is headed on a collision course with a wall, and from the looks of it, there is no stopping it. And this all because I decided to leave the country and GROW UP.

I leave you with this:
Join a non-profit in another state or country
Join the peace-corp.
Work for an NGO.
Teach English abroad.
Start a blog or write a book, abroad of course.

Cheap places abroad where your dollar will go far: Thailand, Argentina, Prague

No WIFE
No KIDS
No JOB
No ****ing worries!
(read it off a wall in a hostel somewhere in Argentina)

I hope this changes your life. GOOD LUCK.
