Community Bank Careers

Mattie Said:

What is required for a career as financial analyst in investment banking community for lateral entry?

We Answered:

Investment banks rarely accept lateral entries, unless they are from another investment bank. Also, an analyst position in an investment bank is simply a stop on the way to a sales position; IB analysts are a dime a dozen, while high-powered salespeople are what makes or breaks an investment bank.

Equity research in brokerage houses is quickly moving away to India. In 2002, there were 300 security analysts in India, now there are 5,700, and it is estimated that there will be about 20,000 in 2011. JP Morgan Chase and Credit Suisse already moved large parts of their research teams to India. Other brokerage houses simply contract their research out to Indian companies like Adventity.

You should consider becoming an investment advisor instead. It's a job that is not going overseas because it requires face-to-face contant with the client. There is a number of large brokerage firms that have local offices and training programs for new advisors. Off the top of my head, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, UBS, and Ameriprise (formerly American Express Financial Advisors) all have those programs. Some insurance companies do as well.

Alternatively, you could start an investment newsletter. With annual subscriptions starting at $100, some newsletter publishers do quite well...

Pauline Said:

Banking job (Need advice for a high school senior for a career)?

We Answered:

In my opinion, banking is not a good career choice for those without a degree. You could get a job as a teller, but that hardly pays anything and advancement will be slow. The higher paying jobs like accounting, loan officers, branch manager, marketing, would want college degrees.

I would think someone without a degree would want to get a job in sales, or perhaps physical labor.

Jane Said:

What are some degrees/certifications that I could aquire within 2-3 years at a community college?

We Answered:

Earn a bachelor's degree in accounting instead. Start at a community college and finish at a local state university campus. You could probably earn this degree in two years and nine months if you attend year round and take one extra class during two semesters. You will need to make sure that the classes you will need will be available when you need them. Even if all the classes are not available when you need them, you still could probably finish in three and a half years.

An entry-level credit analyst position in banking will be very hard to find in two years. Openings for these positions are being greatly reduced due to the use of computers and outsourcing of the remaining jobs to foreign countries. The field is much too narrow for a program of two to three years.

Need help finding a career, and major for college?

We Answered:

You could get into statistical analysis for sports. I'm not sure how much money they make, but accountants make good money. I would recommend majoring in business, with a minor in actuarial mathematics.

Yolanda Said:

I am finding myself in a difficult situation about my career, questions about being a legal runner?

We Answered:

Make a plus sign on a sheet of paper. Label the top with the jobs and label the side pros and cons. List everything you can possibly think of, don't worry about what's more important than something else, just brainstorm. Start with the basics like the pay, the hours, the commute, the job duties. Then move on to the long term things, like job security, possibilities for advancement, etc. Once you've written down everything you can think of, decide which are most/least important. You may want to rank each item 1-10 and add up the totals when you're done. Then it's time to sleep on it and trust your instincts. You may decide after all that thought the one with the lower score is the right move. Changing jobs is rarely an easy decision and no one can make it but you.

We Answered:

Ramon Said:

Do you trust the banking system anymore?

We Answered:

Yes greed gets in on everything.
Families deal with it when there is an inheritance and the relatives stand around like vultures and jackals. It is not good. Everyone wants a piece of the pie.
Bankers, Politicians and Lawyers have for the longest times taken all they could get.
But I do not want to say that every one who is a Banker, or Politician, or Lawyer is a crook because they are not.

But lately we have seen too much cheating and it has weakened us for believing in honest men and women.

I just heard late last night about a Con that these people had set up and they used Oprah and Dr. Oz to sell their product and even said they knew about it when they didn't. Something called Acai Berry Edge that the company would get the unsuspecting people to buy the product and then be on automatic ship and then every 45 days they would charge their credit cards 79.90 and that is high way robbery. It is terrible but at least they caught up to them.
