Banking career is on the safer side and r lucky u got a chance to switch the career if u r not from IT edu. background then it is better to switch as due to recession first people who will loose the job will be those from non IT education.

i think as u said about u.s recession and so ..... u have to switch on to banking side... but it all depends.. about the status of the bank in which you are thinking to shift.... before leaving the software line....you have to get the detail of that particular bank in very proper manner.... anywayz.. all the very best regarding ur future...
