While you can't really "get out of" a mortgage, there are things you can do. There's a new program for people who have lost their jobs and are getting unemployment benefits, that applies to some kinds of mortgages. The bank can reduce your payments for a few months while you are looking for another job. You may also be eligible for other "foreclosure prevention" programs, depending on what kind of loan you have.
The first thing you should do is call your bank and tell them you lost your job. The bank will send you a form to apply for whatever assistance they offer. Get your financial records in order - usually they will want to see 2 years of tax returns, proof that you are on unemployment, and at least a couple of months of bank statements. Keep a copy of everything you send to the bank, and send it by a method that will give you a return receipt.
Whatever you do, don't just give up and walk away from your home without finding out what your rights are.

No lender will give a mortgage without a current job. Most lenders will require that you've been at your current job for 2-3 years before they even consider you.

The most important thing is to take care of your customers one at a time so that they continue to utilize your services and refer others. The next thing is to stay in front of your customers - one of the biggest mistakes we make in our industry is to let our customers forget about us after the loan is closed. A web site that sends out a newsletter every month is a great way to stay in touch.

Partner up with realtors, attorneys, financial planners, insurance agents, etc - they will know people who need mortgage help. Join a BNI group if you aren't already a member. (www.bni.com is their international web site.) The most important thing is to keep your phone ringing IN so that you don't have to dial OUT!

if you were a clerk, there are plenty of clerking jobs in other industries for which you'll likely need only a little OJT.

if you were a salesperson, times are hard and good salespeople are always in demand selling something.

if you were a manager -- i have no idea what may be available in non-financial industries.

Countrywide is announcing layoffs to come also!

you can search mortgage implode and see all the lenders that have been going out of business.
most of these ppl have to move to an area that is doing well or outsource their business.
