Alexander Said:

What makes working a bank different than another?

We Answered:

Ask how each one manages loans they make. Is the loan split up and sold off to investors, or managed in house? An ethical bank will manage their loans in house, and will give you a better understanding of all the internal workings of a bank. These banks usually have slower growth, but are way more stable in the economy.

Ask if they offer further training to people they hire.

Always ask about each banks chain of command, if there are more than 10 people you have to go through to get to the top of the chain, then the bank is not going to offer much promise of promotion. The Smaller the Chain the less likely chance there is to move up. However a large chain will indicate a high turn over rate.

Mission statements, If the rep doesn't know it, don't expect to learn much.

Ask why each bank is a good place to work for the representative. Then distinguish the truth from what he/she says. Look beyond career opportunities, and ask about the internal workings, the kind of people currently employed there, the education level of the people you would be working around, and ask what you could learn from working for them.

Career: In banking, better to work downtown or suburbs?

We Answered:

The way you phrased the question indicates to me that you are ambitious and would never be happy if you don't go for the gusto and the downtown job.

It would be better to try it and then step back to the suburbs than start with the suburbs and try to compete against other downtown candidates.

There will always be openings in the 'burbs'. Maybe not downtown.

Dwight Said:

which one is a better career? Multi- national pharmaceutical company or leading indian bank,?

We Answered:

It would be very difficult to balance having a personal life and working for the bank. You'd be working very long hours so the pay may not be that great when you compute how many hours you'd be working. If I were you I'd stay with the pharma company or look for something in medical sales.

Discuss It!
