Commercial real estate involves commercial property such as strip malls, office buildings, restaurants, gas stations, and more.

Commercial residential is for multifamily dwellings of usually over 4 units. 8-plexes and apartment buildings fall under this umbrella.

Many investors get started investing in residential real estate of single-family homes, duplexes, and 4-plexes. They can then "trade up" through a 1031 exchange or other methods to defer capital gains taxes.

There are MANY different ways to make money in real estate, ranging from a simple landlord to Donald Trump.

Real estate can be a very risky business, but the more you learn and understand about the business, and the more you focus on a particular area of expertise, the more likely you will be to avoid many of the risks.

One suggestion is to play the game Cashflow - it was created by Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad. It's not a cheap game but it does help you learn the fundamentals, and you have to keep an income statement and balance sheet as part of the game.

You might also want to attend local real estate investor meetings, network with other investors, learn from the speakers they have, read some books on real estate, and so on. Also learn about the tax implications of your decisions - that can have a tremendous impact on your net profits.

You may also want to work for a real estate company - if strip malls are of interest to you, find out about some of the companies that develop, own, and manage them so that you can learn the business before putting your own money into properties.

Interview some people who already work in that field.

I assume you already have a bank where you have a checking account - call up your local branch, and tell them you are interested in a career in banking, particularly in IT, and have them suggest someone to talk to.

Set up a 30 min or 1 hour meeting with that person, and ask all these questions to them.

Ask what associations are in the field, what magazines cover the issues of the profession, etc.

Most people would be very interested to talk to a young person about their profession.

This is the "informational interview" as described in Bolles' _What Color is Your Parachute_.

That is something a lot of women face this day and age. Coming from a hiring perspective yes the year gap may look bad to some companies others will ask for an explanation. I know coming from the hiring end of it if there is a 2 or 3 year gap on their resume but someone has the experience and educational degrees to back it up I will call them for an interview.
I told a co-worker of mine the same thing I am about to share with you, your children only grow up once and work is just a paycheck.
