Armed Forces Career Center

Wallace Said:

im 18 and i want to be a marine and i was spit on for it?

We Answered:

Unlike back in earlier part of the century, unlike now, people respected their country, and the young men and women who defended it. You shouldn't worry about jerks like that, they're just angry because they know they cant hack it in any branch of the military.

Dwight Said:

nursing, midwifery, forces?

We Answered:

You choose your branch when you apply & that is what you train in. For civilians the branches are adult, child, mental health & learning disability. For military student nurses the branches are adult or mental health. Nursing & midwifery are two entirely different disciplines so if you want to be a midwife as well as a nurse, you have to spend 3 years training to be a nurse then a further 18 months converting to midwifery. As far as I'm aware the armed forces do not sponsor the midwifery conversion course so it may be something you will have to take a career break for.

If you train as a midwife first (3 years & obviously as a civilian) then decide to train as a nurse as well, you have to complete the full 3 years of nurse training as there is no conversion course.

If the armed forces is where you really want to be then go for nursing. I'm a student nurse & the bursary is pants whereas the military student nurses are better paid.

Seth Said:

Can I go to a recruiter to take the ASVAB somewhere other than MEPs?

We Answered:

You can enlist and get a letter from your dentist stating when your braces are coming off. You won't ship prior to them coming off and you can be on the DEP for up to 365 days. You can take the ASVAB at a MEPS or a MET site if one is available in your area. A picture ID and a SS card is required, along with them taking your fingerprint to prevent "ringers" from taking it in your place.

In terms of taking the ASVAB, it really depends on the chain of command of the recruiting station you are going to. No matter what, they won't test you if you aren't qualified, so at a minimum they will get your name, address, SSN, and phone number to do a police check. If you pass the ASVAB you come on the radar and their chain of command wants to know when you are joining. Obviously, you can say you're not ready and they can forward that up so they can explain why you aren't enlisting. On the other hand, if you pass and then they find out you got a nonwaivable charge or medical problem then they get their behinds blasted for testing a non-qualified applicant.

A good recruiter won't harass you anyway. If you tell them you want to join later they may call every once in awhile, since that's their job. I'll call about once or twice a month if they say they're still interested, and if they tell me they're not interested I just terminate them out of my system so I don't waste my time. In your case, if you show them you want to join eventually they can wait, especially if they are in a town that has a walk-in market.

Perry Said:

Can you join the army in a job centre plus? or only in an armed forces careers office?

We Answered:

You will have to go to an Armed Forces Careers Office. They have all the brochures, and will tell you what you want to know.
A little advice is if you live in a place that has more than one, then visit a couple and compare answers. Make sure they understand that you have not decided on a branch of service and are checking the possibilities of what you would like to do and what they guarantee. Some recruiters are not above fabricating on the truth or stretching it. Most recruiters will tell you like it is, but there are a few running around with nothing in mind but to fill a quota.
Good luck.
