Listen to your mother, don't worry about the cost. the best colleges want the best students regardless of the students ability to pay and there are financial aid programs to help pay for educational costs.For example, students are no longer expected to take out loans at Yale.
"Yale admits students for their academic and personal promise without regard to ability to pay. Our new financial aid policies increase the number of families who qualify for aid. Concern about cost should not keep students from applying. 100% of demonstrated need will be met."

The Financial Aid Package
A financial aid award typically includes a need-based Yale Scholarship and a self-help contribution (which consists of a term time job and a student income contribution). Students are no longer expected to take out loans at Yale. Outside scholarships may replace the self-help contribution. ROTC scholarships are also available
