You didn't mention your age and if the felony was committed as a juvenile or an adult

If it was after you were 18 then you have no career with a police department with that felony on your record

If it was a juvenile arrest, you probably still don't have a chance but it is better than if you were 18 when you did the crime

My department would not hire you even with a juvenile record, but some others may. Your best bet is to fill out applications, explain what happened, and hope for the best, but I would say in all honesty you chances are nill to none

Our department goes all the way back to grade school for the background check, and if a candidate got into a fight in the 7th grade, that disqualifies him or her with our department, so it is a department decision as to how they would look at your situation.

You may have a better chance on a smaller department

If you're starting a business, you should already know what you want to sell or service to patrons. If you're unsure about career paths, try soem internships or a temp agency. If you can, take some classes (perhaps writing?) to help make the desicion. If worse comes to worse, the process of elimination is a sure bet. Try something out, you can always find another job. Anything will be more entertaining and rewarding than a call center.
