In the '73 World Series, Game 2, Bottom of the 9th, Was the Deron Johnson Double a Misplay by Willie Mays?

We Answered:

As a Mets' fan, I remember that World Series, and Willie Mays was at the end of his career. He probably would not have played the outfield if Rusty Staub didn't hurt his shoulder in Game 4 of the NLCS. He missed Game 5 of the NLCS and Games 1 and 2 of the World Series.
At that time, the only throws Willie Mays could make was to get the ball to Bud Harrelson in the infield, he couldn't throw to the plate anymore and couldn't run well.

I saw his last appearance at the plate it was in Game 4 of the Series in Shea, where he popped up. The Mets won that Game 5-1, Jon Matlak started.

I remember how I felt the day the Mets got Willie Mays in May of 1972. I remember hearing Lindsey Nelson on TV, when Willie had his first AB in a Mets' uniform... "...if you were here from the beginning, and all of the loosing and the days in the Polo Grounds, just the sight of this man in your team's uniform has to do something to you..."

I remember the 1973 World Series, and just wish it had a different ending.
