totally agree. While he is a terrific athlete and fantastic at rebounding/defending, he is not a top 5 player.
1. Howard actually has a lot to improve on defensively as well. He relies too much on his athletic ability, and not on his mind. Great defenders like Alonzo Mourning, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Bill Russel outsmarted their foes, not out jumped them.
2. Offensively, he has an ugly baby hook, dunks, and free throws. That's all he does. Since the centers today are so watered down, that gives him 20 ppg. I guarentee you that in the 90s, which not only had greats like Hakeem, Robinson, Shaq, and Ewing, but also had many lock down defenders like Dikembe and Mourning, and other very good centers like Daugherty and Smit, Howard would be a 12-10 guy at best
3. In an era where guards and wings dominate, it should be pretty clear that those are the players that deserve to be in the top 5. Centers aren't even the most important bigmen anymore. Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitkzi, Pau Gasol, and Carlos Boozer have totally changed the PF position.
4. Look at him in the post season. He has more games where he had under 20 then over 20. Good players don't do that.

Look, Howard will be great some day, he's a very good player right now. But to say he is better than Bosh, Duncan, or Dirk is simply false.
