Is a career change from Finance to Healthcare possible?

We Answered:

~~Yes, and preferable in this economic situation we are in. Depending on your entry level, it can be simple or you may need to go back to school for a degree or training certification for a higher paying or specialty position.~~

Career change from Finance to IBanking, teaching, or something else?

We Answered:

Given your finance degree and the experience you've already gained, you're in good shape to be successful in multiple areas.

First, you're right about teaching. It can be an incredibly rewarding job emotionally and intellectually, but the pay is not great in comparison with the financial field. You could have a tough time getting a position that immediately pays you more than 50k, especially without an advanced degree. As you probably know, if you're interested in teaching at the college level, you should aim to get at least a masters degree, if not a doctorate. Over the long term, this will give you a lot more opportunity for advancement, for a higher salary, and for getting published and being taken seriously by your peers and superiors.

If you're considering teaching below the college level, you may not need to get additional education...and you could get started sooner. Here are two links with some useful info about the teaching profession:

But it may not yet be time to forget about finance, especially if you enjoy some aspects of the work. If your primary complaint is that you want more interaction with other people and less time alone, then you may want to look at another career within the financial services world, such as consulting, trading, or a whole host of other options. I-banking is certainly very well paid, and at the higher levels there is quite a bit of human interaction...but at the more junior levels you will still have quite a bit of number crunching to do in your office.

If you'd like to speak to one of our career advisors (we have ex-teachers, professors and ibankers) we'd be happy to give you further advice or help you create a new resume. How do I go about having a career change from Finance to HR?

We Answered:

Usually the H.R. dept wants people with some experience so maybe taking a class in this field might get them to hire you. It all depends on what company and if they are hiring. Have you thought about talking to someone in your H.R dept.?

Career change help (finance or IT)?

We Answered:

i am reading between the lines but here is my best guess for you.

first of all i don't think you will make any more money in finance than IT. to get the finance job that you want you will need a masters from a quality school and i think that you are in your current position because you are average at IT and so you will be average in finance so i don't see much chance of a top job.

the extra time and money may get you a job in a field that you might find more interesting and so you would gain in that way. you should not let your age affect your decision. i might switch to a different major if it only required an extra year. you might consider taking some finance courses along with the IT degree and get a job in the investment sector.

hope this helps

What is a good answer to - " Why do you want to change your career from Finance to HR? "?

We Answered:

Coming from an Accounting/Finance/Systems background myself, I’ll give you some of my points of view - maybe you will find it helpful.

Although I enjoy Accounting/Finance/System and have experience in the field, I have found a greater reward in "growing people" and helping them achieve their goals within an organization. In my experience, companies have a need for HR personnel who have a keen understanding of Business (Fiscal) Functions and Business Process requirements to be able to align such with its management of Human Capital. This type of blended experience can only help a business succeed in synchronizing its workforce with its objectives.

In other words - I recommend that your "statement" focus be on how your previous experience is a benefit to your career switch. And, more so, your interest in managing people... not just managing "the books".

Something like that : )

Career change: how do I get into magazine editing? I have a finance background.?

We Answered:

I put 'magazine editing' into the search bar and there are a few sites you could look at and books about it you could buy.I would imagine a grounding in journalism would help.My son is a graphic designer for a magazine publisher and loves his job.
