Career Change From Teaching

Francisco Said:

Career change from the teaching profession?

We Answered:

Hi B. You are definitely facing a difficult decision. My niece recently went through this same scenario. After getting her teaching credential she realized the public school systems are a mess and may not be a rewarding career for her. She is currently teaching English to teens in Taiwan and discovering teens are just as unruly and unresponsive there! But the position has allowed her to travel and explore a country that she finds fascinating. And, she is gaining work experience that will serve her well in the future - wherever that future may lead her.

You are close to getting your credential. It might be wise to finish the process - even if you choose not to pursue teaching at this time. It will represent a fall-back, "fail-safe", position for you.

Because you do not have a clear alternative direction at this time, taking a teaching position and doing your very best at it while you explore career alternatives might be wise. You never know how the skills you will develop in the classroom will serve you in a new career, and having a steady job can provide the financial security that allows you the time to explore other ideas and options.

Rarely is the first job in modern life one's final career decision. But you need to start somewhere. So start. Keep your options open. Explore your passions and interests. Use a short-term teaching "gig" to propel you to a new career when you become clear about what direction that will be.

Best wishes and good luck.

Change of Career from Teaching to......?

Hey, you need to teach before becoming a principal. Check with your State Teachers Qualifications Board! But hey, you must LOVE teaching and BE SURE of it. You don't seem to be!
Bottom line: check your States' Certification Board! And then check what teachers are needed where you live?? Good luck, y'all!
