Career change : Computer networking or home automation ?

We Answered:

If you like being creative, go for home automation. This market is relatively tiny in comparison to network communications, but it has very strong growth potential. Since the components required for home automation are decreasing in price, more and more people are making the decision to upgrade their security system to a full blown home automation system. Your background should allow you to be very successful, since part of the trick is figuring out how to set up all the networks in the system (ie. video, computers, dist. audio, etc.). Bottom line to me is that you'll make more of a difference to people by helping them automate their homes, than by working at the help desk. And if the company ever gets rid of the position, you'll probably have enough knowledge and contacts to start your own business. Good luck, either way!

Career change : Computer networks or Marketing ?

We Answered:

Depends on what is your long term goal. Are you interested in building a career in IT or in marketing? Remember, marketing may look like challenging and interesting in the beginning, but requires lot of traveling and may not be suitable when you like to settle in a place and have kids and a family to take care. On the other side, there are enough opprotunities in computer networking that you can build a challending career. Try some certifications from CISCO on netowrking, do a PMP from PMI and you will certainly have some advantage in the market...
