Career Change Over 50

Lillie Said:

For those over 50.?

We Answered:

I just answered a question in another category about favorite sayings. mine, "Better to try and fail. Than fail through fear of trying." When I retired at age 65 I had a pickup with a camper. My dog Isis and I spent three years of our lives just seeing the country. Greatest memories I have. My friend Isis is now waiting for me at the rainbow bridge and at 80 I am getting itchy feet to see new places and conquer new worlds. With age comes wisdom and computers. I am not rushing into anything. I am doing a lot of research and have narrowed it down to three places. One, a large city. I visited it and rejected it. I no longer desire to drive in city "stock car races. "

Check it out, research places that have the cost of living and lifestyle, attitude you feel comfortable with then, GO FOR IT! You can't do it any younger and it will give you a new prospective on things.

How do you get a student loan for a non-college program?

We Answered:

Just because the program is not at a college does not mean that she cannot get a loan, but I don't think it would be considered a student loan, I think it would be considered a loan to meet the changing job requirements. She could actually go down to the local career center and see if they could give her some good resources that would be beneficial to her.

Career change-working with animals?

We Answered:

You realize those jobs don't pay much, right? But a vetrinary assistant or vet tech (probably need to have some special schooling) would let you be hands on. Most pet stores would hire you at minimum wage, or local animal shelters.

Yeah. Get out of there. Go fishing! Screw them. They don't care about you. They just care about their damn TPS reports.

Seeking Advice on Career Change?

We Answered:

If you can't think of what you enjoy maybe start by ruling out careers by what you don't like:

It's hard to know what we want to be when we grow up huh :)

For Me I don't care for talking to tons of people everyday so the lab is nice to where I can deal with the same ten or so people everyday.

I don't like patient contact

I don't like the food service industry, people are mean when they are hungry.

I don't like customer service because of ??? You fill in the blank? Or maybe you don't mind it?

I don't like salesmen that are pushy, maybe you would be that nice "real" salesman?

Hope this helps a little?

Graphic Designer to Plumber? What's your opinion on this career as a change?

We Answered:

Being a plumber is hard work. It won't be a good job for you when you are in your 40s or 50s. Owning your own plumbing business and being the boss would be okay, as long as other people were doing the sewer cleaning and lifting the roto-rooter (those things are very heavy).

Can you imagine working out in the freezing weather, cleaning out people sewers, with your hands wet, the wind blowing, etc. when you are 50? I think you should stick with Graphic Design. Good luck.
