Career Change Questionnaire

Beatrice Said:

It is my "plan" for the final paper, pls comment on it, whether you like it or not, or what to improve/change?

We Answered:

I think your paper is very well organized but I am a bit concerned about the limitation on length. You may have some run over with covering so many ideas unless you plan to compress a few and down play some of the not so subject relevant topics.

Hugh Said:

What career should i strive to move into?

We Answered:

You could pursue the doctor career - but instead of being an ordinary GP, why not work for Doctors Without Boarders - helping people overseas etc. It would be really fulfilling and people would remember you too.

Questionnaire for Law Enforcement?

We Answered:

1) I wanted to have more than just a job where I sat at a desk and have a boring life. I liked the variety and challenge of a career in law enforcement. I wanted to make a difference in a community and as cliche as it sounds I wanted to help people. It was not as I expected. I spend each day usually dealing with the same gang bangers, druggies, and thieves who will never change or change when it's too late. I spend most days being a marriage counselor and shrink.

2) Trying to help people who have no desire to help themselves. And look to me to fix problems in 20 minutes that took years to create.ie..parents who don't parent.

3) Every once in a while you actually get through to someone and make a positive difference in their life.

4) I have not. It is a good job but... The hours are terrible, the legal system accommodates the offenders, liberal judges and lazy prosecutors ruin good cases, lack of cooperation from the public, the list is too long.

5) I've seen the best Officers come from a background that is less than perfect to say the least. They understand and can recognize certain behaviors in people on the street. As a FTO (Field Training Officer) every person I have seen termintated from the program have had a college background. Some things can't be taught in a classroom and are instinctual.

6) Yes, we are defintely heavily scrutinzed. From the way we look, talk, act, speak, and drive. The public is more and more reluctant to help the police out and provide information. It's a "me" society.

7) Law Enfrocement is a quasi military organziation - we work for the machine. Every Officer is a cog in the machine. Recognizing the officer as a person rather than a title is important. Providing assistance on the job to Officers in need of counseling is huge. Address stress, substance abuse, depression, and post traumatic stress syndrome. Encourage asking for help rather than hiding the issue and living with the skeleton in a dark closet.

8) Being respected by my co-workers and knowing I have been a "good cop". I struggle to find an answer to this question - the bad definitely outweighs the good in this profession.

9) M

10) 39

11) H

12) 12

13) Detective

14) College

15) Municipal

Advice on career choices?

We Answered:

Identify skills that are transferable. Remember as a mom you may also coordinate events, maintain a budget, resource supplies...it is not all changing diapers. Your ability to get job interviews for jobs that lead you out of the maze of childcare is to be able to SELL your transferable skills that are applicable to their job skills. Good luck
While this site is aimed at boomers there is lots of info about career transition that applies to all ages.
