Career Change Quiz

Dale Said:

Which career? Plumber, Electrician or elevator mechanic. I enjoy challenging situations, people, and change!?

We Answered:

Personally I'm going to become a plumber(an apprentice very soon hopefully),electrician would be my second choice. Both have variety if you go far,for plumbing you learn how to design piping systems, work with more tools, work varies more, perfect for me,you have to be willing to get dirty,It doesn't bother me,so for me personally this is more enjoyable, get to do emergency work. For electrical, you can learn to work on very complex systems, circuits, trouble shooting motors and such definetly a challenge, less tools but requires precision, and is clean work, gets really hot though in the attics, the second most interesting to me.try to find out the details of both If you enjoy and are determined both can make a great living, both for advanced work require knowledge and hands on skills. My dad would personally choose to be an electrician, because it's clean work, lot's of people are that way, plumbing sounds more interesting to me though.hope this helps.

Is there an online Quiz to match you up with your perfect career?

We Answered:

Myers-Briggs is the big name in career assessment tests - if you search on that, you'll get their top competitors too.

Also, I know some job boards (I know Monster does!) have links to different assessment tests - some do free "mini" versions and then want you to pay for the full results.

I would suggest taking as many free online ones as you can - it will give you a good perspective.

Also, you may try and find out if your local community college offers this as a class (mine did, under the Counseling program) It's a great way to see if there is an area that will suit you.

Finally - there is a difference between the tests and real life - just because a test says you will like & be good at something, doesn't always mean you will be - but it is certainly a good place to start. And, your test results CAN change - I used to be an "I" in Myers-Briggs, now I'm an "E"

Best of luck!

Pamela Said:

I have no idea what I want as a career/major?

We Answered:

Looking back on my career path and those of my peers, I'd say you're right. At every stage of maturity, you can find you've lost interest in what you've accomplished so far...and new compelling challenges become elusive..and costly to pursue.

I'd say the "best" strategy at the beginning, is to study the most useful combination of subjects for who you are, at the time. So in your case I'd recommend a technical major and some courses in management studies and project management (both of which you can upgrade at any and every point in your future). Management studies (economics, marketing, finance) and project management are both independent of any technology specialties and they both will involve you in the broader aspects of working with people on interesting challenges....at every stage of your life. The good part is that you'll eventually become expert and adept at helping others resolve their issues in a variety of industry and market sectors, which seems to be your strength and your passion.

Hint: Check out some of the resume writing books and online guides. The process of developing a CV or resume is the same, really, as preparing yourself for selecting a career or picking the right courses of study to qualify for a career based on your personality type and range of interests and/or skills.

Leona Said:

I seriously have no idea what my future career is. any suggestions?

We Answered:

I have been there and done that. I was 20 years old and had been at 3 different colleges. I was LOST IN SPACE. So I took a step back and said what do I want to be when I grow up. Well, I had no clue. So I went down and talked to an Air Force recruiter, just to see what they had to offer. I figured 4 years and I could grow up, and maybe get some insite into what I wanted to do with my life. That was the best thing I could of done for myself. I joined the Air Force. Met some Engineers who encouraged me, and I went back to college after 2 years, and got that BSEE degree. Now I am an electrical engineer and love my job. So, I say to you, go and check out the Air Force.

There are many different jobs in the Air Force, many.
