Career Change Science

Dwayne Said:

career change in actuarial science?

We Answered:

Well I was an actuarial student in UK for a year, 35 years ago. In those days they made a point of failing 80% of students on principle, just to make sure they only got the very best available. Many fellow students had been doing it for many years. We all worked for a UK insurance department. It was pretty demoralizing to have worked quite hard and then be told 'shows little knowledge!'. If you are _seriously_ good at math (I obviously wasn't!), then give it a try.

Making a career change. Do I stand a chance to work in the Science industry?

We Answered:

I'm sure that a 4 year degree in Mathematics, or Physics will get you plenty of career opportunities out there. I think that a good living is a given with one of those challenging degrees.

Myself, I'm working on a BS in engineering (after losing my "secure" factory job due to layoffs) - and struggling to keep up with homework. A lot of people don't make it - so by the time the weak ones are weeded out, the survivors are pretty much guaranteed a decent career.

Willie Said:

considering a career change to forensic science.?

We Answered:

If you want to work in the lab you will need to get another bachelor's degree in a physical science: that's chemistry, physics, or biology. An uphill climb, but at least you have your general studies out of the way with your CJ degree. If you want to be a CSI, become a cop and after you do your road time, transfer to crime scene. Anything science-related means you need another degree, though.

Science degree - change of career direction?

We Answered:

You can do a Master's.

A friend of mine did a 3 year degree in computing and then decided he wanted to do finance... So he went on and did a 1 year finance master's.

He had no financial background whatsoever.

Rafael Said:

Career change...how do i get into Pharmaceutical sciences? Can i do it at open university?

We Answered:

You're virtually going to have to go back to the drawing board. You'll need to take chemistry and other pre-pharm classes and then spend 4 years in a pharmacy program. That's if you can get some of your first two year classes to transfer.

Pharmacy school takes 6 years to complete if you start out as a freshman.
