Career Change To Investment Banking

Alan Said:

Is this a good time to enter Investment Banking?

We Answered:

Depends where you want to work. Though Investment bankers are getting flack for the mess they have created, you can be sure they will come up with something new to make money.

People will always need money, so you can be sure investment banking is going to be around for a long time to come.

They get paid well too, you can always diversify into Fund Management or other areas of finance, if you see the situation is not that good in 2 years time.

Go for it!

Career change into investment banking?

We Answered:

Have you done anything to show interest to employers? Maybe signed up for a single night class in the area? Everyone wants to get into IB when they hear the money they make, have you done your research? Are you willing to put 100 hours/week in the beginning?

So the companies you are serious, and you might have a chance

Erika Said:

How do I change career from an Assistant Buyer to investment banking?

We Answered:

Realistically, if you even got an interview with an investment bank I would consider it a miracle. Unless you went to an Ivy League school for undergrad or grad school it is a long shot. It is tough in investment banking right now, with most i banks cutting jobs, not making new ones. The Certificate programs will probably not help at all. An advanced degree in a quantitative field on the other hand, would help. As for an entry level i banking job, you would start off as an analyst, unless you grabbed a PhD on your way to work one day, then you may start as an associate. Either way, be prepared to not get paid much (compared to other more lucrative jobs on Wall Street), work 100+ hours a week, and have no life.

Good Luck!

How's The Forecast Of Investment Banking?

We Answered:

Same, nothing will change. It will take a few years and everything is back to old same. Remember the savings and loans? Well, nothing has changed, since then it was the savings and loans, not the investment houses.
Greed is always there and that means, all will be back to "normal" soon.

How to get an investment banking career?

We Answered:

It's very difficult, if not impossible, to obtain a position in NYC coming out of Australia (this isn't unfair; the reverse is also true non-Aussie's can NOT get banking jobs in Australia - I've tried). It will be much easier if you do 2 years with an Aussie (or HK/Singapore) bank, apply to top US MBA programs, and enter banking in NY as an associate. That said, the dual degree will offer very little value added... get a high enough GPA (or whatever your grading schemes are over there) and maximize your chances at an Aus/Asian bank.

Roberta Said:

Is changing careers to investment banking at age 34 achieveable?

We Answered:

depends what you want to do. You will not become a "big wig", but you can get a job. Also, I think you need to do more research on the CFA. You cannot get one by taking classes. There is a 3 part exam you ahve to take!!!!.
