I would do so as soon as possible and try to make the break on the best terms possible as your first principal's recommendations will go a long way in helping you when you return to teaching.

Most people in that role respect teachers who are up front with things like this and do their best to make the transition smooth.

I am a teacher and I am fully aware that my students will take many different paths: college, tech school, work, and the military, for example. No matter the kind of work you do, you will continue to get training and education throughout your career. I think that any reasonable instructor would be pleased to see you know what you want, the training you will need and have yourself ready to start your life when you leave high school. My only advice would be to keep all your options open.
