Careers Change Advice

Debra Said:

I'm 35, in full time employment but want to change career. Where can I go for good careers advice?

We Answered:

you could do a professional qualification in your chosen area and that combined with any exp you have will give you a better edge to apply for jobs. If you do a few google searches and see if you can find a course that you like the sound of. You can do most of them from home.

I think post education you are suppose to be your own careers advisor (sucks I know) although, again using google, they are a few websites with free personality quizzes which tell you which jobs suits your personality

Aaron Said:

I have been working in the construction industry for 8 years and would like to change careers. Any advice?

We Answered:

The easiest way to transition is to find something in a related field. With your skills and experience, I'm sure you'd be able to apply at architectural firms downtown. Or, as you say, you have computer skills, so you could go for any computer related job that doesn't require highly specialized skills.

But with only an Associates degree, that may hold you back. Sometimes, the easiest way to transition to another industry is to go back to school. With the Associates degree, you're already halfway toward a Bachelors degree, so I'd suggest looking into 4-year colleges nearby, and see which ones will give you credit for your first two years of school. If you find one that gives you full credit, you can graduate in just 2 years more with a degree in whatever field you want to pursue. It would update your skills in whatever field you choose, but the most obvious possibilities would be Computer Science, Art, Business, or even Architecture. Have you thought about becoming an architect?

A 2yr Assoc. Degree in Nursing Sciencewould prepare you to sit the Nursing Boards to get your RN licence. You can work with this.A BS (another 2yr.) Gets you more money and potentially a higher position.
I am not sure how many of your past Credit are transferrable. It is up to the School. Check out RN Education on line. You have lots of options and available money. Nurses are needed

I want to change careers any advice?

We Answered:

Hello there

I don't think there is a formula for changing careers, but it may surprise you that these days an average individual is likely to have a complete change of career direction at least 2-3 times in their working life.

I'd possibly look at things like hobbies and interests first, and see whether any of those may be turned into a profitable career. Secondly, investigate the options for further training based on those interests; you may be pleasantly surprised with what you discover.

Failing all of the above, take a walk to your local career centre (you can easily find the nearest one oer the net) and have a talk to a specialist - they could tell you which career suits you best according to your personality, and advise accordingly.

Good luck!

I'm an accountant looking to change careers, any advice?

We Answered:

I used to work at a small company where our accountant eventually became the vice president. I'd say look for a small business that you can grow with. You may start out just doing the financial aspects but I think that there will be a lot of opportunities for you to get involved in other areas and eventually get someone else to relive you of your accountant duties.

CAREER ADVICE: Is this a good time to change careers?

We Answered:

I would suggesst doing both, stay where you are, and do school on a part time bases if possible. Even do school on-line. I wish you luck, and times are tough.
