Change Career Advice

Howard Said:

Help? I am lost and need to change my career. advice, please?

We Answered:

Hi there.

Fear not - so you are in a place you do not like doing things you hate...so now you are closer to finding that dream job bcz you already know one thing NOT to be (discovering what you don't like is just as beneficial as discovering what you love.)

Do a few things: Do a search for free career assessments - you can search this at about.com or just about anywhere I imagine. I usually say start at about.com and filter through them - some require you to pay a fee for a detailed report but they will send you a summary for free...and since you are getting started a summary might be enough.

You can also go the the library/book store and check out books like 'what colour is your parachute' and 'now discover your strengths' the latter one I particularly like - it's by Marcus Buckingham. He takes you through a series of steps to find your strengths - and there is also a spot in the book to tap into a website to take an assessment. knowing your natural strengths, in my opinion, will help you find fields that not only you will like but will excel at.

Give it a go, once you start taking ownership of your career/life, that job that you hate now becomes a LOT more bearable bcz YOU know you are going to be leaving soon for something better (but never let on about that, OK?) :~)

Good luck!

I am in need of a career change. Any advice?

We Answered:

Look into Instructional Design. You could work for a major healthcare corporation or a nursing school building online healthcare courses. :)

Jorge Said:

I'm engineer with MBA degree. Combined I have 2 years of experience. I want to change career. Please advice?

We Answered:

With an engineering degree and an MBA, if your MBA is a from an okay school, then your options are endless. Take your cue from what MBA classes interested you, and go through your school's MBA recruiting to try to find a position in that area. You may need to rework your resume a bit to make it better suit your new field, but you'll find that, just after getting your MBA is one of the easier times to change career fields. Employers tend to be more open to you switching at this time - they see you as an MBA, not necessarily as an engineer.

So, what did you like in MBA school? What fields interest you?

You could be qualified to do marketing (product management) for a firm in a discipline related to your undergrad degree. Or do consulting for a consulting firm. Or get into an MBA-oriented management training program. Lots of options.

maybe you should take an aptitude test to see where your interest are. check with your local unemployment office and see if they offer any such thing or maybe a local college would have some kind of assistance for you. good luck
