You might find another career that has a similar salary right off the bat, if you're really lucky. Most positions don't come easily. You have to start at the bottom and work your way up the corporate ladder. Even if you find a job with similar salary, the trouble would be in finding a job with decent benefits. State employees have job security and good benefits, usually. Ever think of working for city, county, or state jobs?

You are never too old to follow your dreams. In fact we just had a teacher leave this year to go to Med school. . .and he is well into his 40's. Follow your heart. It will lead you to the job that you will be happiest doing.

If you can communicate what you know in an engaging way then by all means teach. Simply having the knowledge does not necessarily mean one can effectively convey it to others, particularly those who do not share your love of the topic.

I have taught Science for 29 years. I would not want to do anything else. It can be rewarding and exciting. It can also be frustrating and heartbreaking. If done correctly it takes up a great deal of time both at school and at home. I arrive at school around 7:45 and do not leave until 5:30. This past week end I spent time Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening grading papers and submitting progress reports. I cannot leave my job at school and pick it up the next morning. It goes with me every where I go. I am always on the lookout for ideas and materials. I have taught ages 12 through 18. There are advantages and disadvantages at all levels. You just have to find you niche. I prefer 14 and 15 year olds....call me crazy! There is a shortage of Science teachers. If you are not afraid of hard work, I would say "go for it".

From research I have been doing, most medical programs that you have mentioned will require about 2 years of school (probably a vocational school or a community college depending on the career. Pharmacy Tech, however, is not required to go to school. Walgreen's mostly hire their Pharmacy Tech's from with-in the company and train them on the job, while paying them, and paying for their National certification. If you want to be prepared and certified before looking for a job, I'd recommend a program like Penn Foster online classes. Good luck on the path you choose!
