Changing Careers From Teaching

Deborah Said:

other careers for teachers?

We Answered:

I know several teachers who have left their school systems in order to pursue careers as pharmaceutical company reps. The pay is excellent, and the job requires the rep to teach doctors and nurses about the company's new medications. The company provides thorough training. Reps are needed all over the country, in both urban and rural areas, and you meet and interact with fascinating people. I've never met a pharmaceutical rep that didn't love his / her job, but there must be one somewhere who doesn't.

Other careers for teachers?

We Answered:

The most obvious career choices for English Majors are writing, journalism, editing, publishing, and teaching. However, other less intuitive job options include positions in advertising, public relations, acting, law, business, marketing, and directing.

Loretta Said:

Should I change careers (again) from Real Estate to Teaching?

We Answered:

I cannot be your mentor but I am older and wiser. Pursue your dreams, as time goes by very fast believe me. When I was young I always dreamed of being a Elementary School teacher and I planned to go on to college after high school. I would have been the first person in my family to go to college. Unfortunately a turn of events happened that changed my life. My father died unexpectedly of a heart attack when I was 17 1/2 just about to go to my first simester in Brooklyn College. Because of his death, I had to drop out, and go to work to help support my Mother and younger brother. I got a good job but I was really unfullfilled and so depressed over my father's death. I married at 21 to a Police Officer and had three children and for whatever reason I never went back to college. Now I totally regret it as I would have made a great teacher. You have the education, your masters, and there is really no research to do..go for it. The first thing you should do is choose a good college and speak with the counselor and see what you would want to teach. Listen, after my husband retired from NYPD, he went into Real Estate and made a very lucrative living, but he became an alcoholic, and had to quit, so Real Estate is the type of business that is very tricky and you can make tons of money or starve. Go for teaching...it is rewarding and with your education, you probably can teach in a university and make a good living. Best of Luck to you...My advice, follow your dreams so you will not have any regrets later in life.
