Mitchell Said:

Career change - any experience of a drastic career change in 20's, 30's, 40's?

We Answered:

I'm only 29 and I've done it twice already!

My degree is in film studies and my first job after graduating was working for a film distributor. I enjoyed it, but when I was 24 I relocated to the UK and found that those jobs paid very, very little over here.

It took me a while to decide what I wanted to do and I did temp admin jobs while I was deciding (bearing in mind that a degree in film studies doesn't give you that many options). I decided I wanted to get into recruitment. I did it by taking a job as an Office Manager in a recruitment company and working my way up. Bear in mind that there are different types of recruitment companies and if you wanted to get into most agencies, you could go straight into a consultant job with no experience and they'd train you up if you're the right personality type, but I wanted to go into an executive search / headhunting company.

This year, however, I'd been thinking about moving into HR. The only thing that put me off was knowing that I'd have to take a pay cut as I didn't have experience. Well, about a month ago I was made redundant from my recruitment job and there really aren't any recruiting jobs around at the moment, so that was my mind made up for me! I have found a job in HR, and I have taken a substantial pay cut but my employer is going to fund my CIPD qualification (professional HR qualification) and that is worth a considerable amount.

At 23, the most important thing to bear in mind is that, since retirement age is now 65, you have 42 years more of working life left! That's practically your entire life so far twice over. Do you want to spend that amount of time doing a job you don't enjoy? If not, then make a change!

In the current economic situation, there aren't many jobs around anyway so now is the perfect time to take time out and study. Or, as in my situation, I was going to have to take a pay cut anyway so it made sense to use the opportunity to move to a field that I'd been wanting to get into.

Willard Said:

Does it make sense to make a drastic career change after 2 semesters of studying the field?

We Answered:

Yes, it does make sense - if you're not happy, then do something about it !
I live by this : You only live once - follow your dreams.
I am 40 and have changed my career several times with no regrets, (only wish I'd done it sooner !) Banking for 17 years, flight attendant for 3 years, college and now a newly graduated RN !!! I am also about to marry my third husband ! Hey, if you're not happy, only YOU can change it ! Have faith in yourself ! You CAN succeed in whatever you want !! Best wishes !!

Cecil Said:

Am I too old for a drastic career change?

We Answered:

Jesus! you are still young! if you are 25 and you think that you are too old for anything, then you must be doing something wrong, I'm 25 too, you could be 35 and you wouldnt be too old.
