Decisions decisions- dealing with siblings and the economy?

We Answered:

I'm sorry. Was there a question in there? I must have missed it during the "my life is not my responsibility" whine fest.

Andrea Said:

Can someone help me get an IT position with Cincinnati Children's Hospital?

We Answered:

Im a little confused- if you want to move to Cincy so badly, why are you limiting yourself to Children's Hospital? Sure, its supposed to be an OK place to work, but there are plenty of other employers in the Cincy area, so if you expand you search, you are a whole lot more likely to make this happen. My suggestion to you is this- look for a job in both Cincinnati and Dayton. Even with no experience, Im sure you will be able to find something quickly with those certifications. Then if you find a job in Dayton, you just move somewhere in the middle, like West Chester, LLebanon, Mason, or Liberty Township. I live in Liberty Township, work in the Dayton area (40 minute commute to the specific part of town I work in), but from my house, I can be all the way down to the bridge to cross the Ohio river in 30 minutes. So it actually works out pretty well, and a whole lot of people do it- they are actually going to start counting Dayton and Cincy as the same metro area on the next census because they have grown together so much. I wish I could hire you, I could use a full-timer with those kind of qualifications, but Im kind of stuck with a semi-retired guy that only wants to put in 20 hours a week (Id so much rather have someone full time, but cant do anything about it). Just look on Careerbuilder or Monster for Cincy and Dayton, you'll find a ton of things you are qualified for- in particular, look at a company called Pomeroy, which is actually based in Northern Kentucky. They hire a lot of folks with qualifications like yours, and you could actually end up at childrens that way, as I know they do a lot of contracts for them.

Graphic Design Career Change?

We Answered:

I studied Art in the 80s for 3 years
I've also took seom free R.O.P. Classes in Graphic Design so I know basic Photoshop, CorelDraw and Illustrator...

Graphic Design jobs are in real high demand right now...some
of those guys make $20 to $30 an hour!! No joke! Why?
Because Solo Artists like myself need them to make our Cd covers, our DVD cover, our Posters, our flyers, our Business cards, our Press Kits, & our T-shirts, etc. My good friend who owns a local print shop is always busy ...he made my CD covers, my DVD covers, and my Poster so I use his services every couple of weeks...
yesterday he even made my brand new Band logos which I've designed last week.

He also helped me make my Blue Print Drawings for my Custom Guitar Prototype as well. So, it would be a very good move on your part to look into it because there IS A great need out there for Graphic Designers.

be mindful that in todays Graphics job market, you will need to learn
thes programs for real in stay on top of your game

Photoshop
Illustrator
QuarkXpress
Dreamweaver
PageMaker

look for yourself how much Graphic Designers make per hour

Elementary School Teachers?

We Answered:

I just finished a M.E.D. with a BS in unrelated field. I decided to teach for several reasons. I like the hours and I enjoy teaching. I find that I feel most rewarded in the 5th/6th grade as these students are just begining to use higher level thinking. I find the lower grades more busy as you have to teach reading and math with manipulatives which most times you have to desing and construct on your own. In middle school, you sow the seed and hope it takes..lots of behavior issues. Highschool is hit and miss. You teach to those who want to learn and those who don't, won't.

There...hope that was helpful.

How to get job in investing?

We Answered:

All major brokerage firms are always looking for sales personnel, but you should consider working for a bank owned broker/dealer especially since they pay their reps salaries rather than commissions only.
Banks are always looking for to staff their securities sales areas.

Many mutual fund companies use sales personnel, not only for dealing with the general public but also for the wholesale of their products. This involves visiting broker/dealers for selling the fund's products.

There's a reference book used in this industry called the "Securities Dealers of North America" (also called "the red book"). This list brokerage firms in geographical area. This would help for you picking a region close to you. It will give you names, contacts and phone numbers. You can send your resume and follow up with phone calls.

So- check with the b/d's in your area, the banks, and the mutual fund companies. Whatever you do, try to stay with name firms and/or banks.

Good luck, if you want it bad enough, you can do it.

What are job options for former band teacher?

We Answered:

How about actually working as a musician? Should you ever return to teaching the practical experience will be an asset. I taught visual art for 13 years in secondary and primary school talented art situations,my having an MFA and no ED degree. I had to have had a minimum of five years professional experience to qualify,I had eight. The point of the program was to have actual working artist teach classes in the Visual,Musical, and Theatrical arts. During the whole time I never met an english teacher that was writing anything, a science teacher doing science, etc. There was the occasional music teacher/musician, art teacher/artist but they were the exception and not the rule. Live what you teach and then teach what you know. Personally I think that there is a fallacy in obtaining a degree in ED. The subject being taught isn't the major.,the learning how to teach is. The thinking is that the teacher doesn't really need to know the subject very well and only needs to know how to relay information.Sort of like P.E. teachers teaching geography just for a job while they hope for a coaching position to open up..
