Once you have got your qualification, you could set yourself up as a book keeper (self employed) - you may even be able to get some funding to get a website, business cards and support. Check out any Enterprise Trusts in your area, many of them offer help with funding, training and support in running your own business. This help is normally free as local councils support people working for themselves.You could work your own hours, work from home and have a more flexible lifestyle. I work from home as a freelance agent and I love it.

Never too late. I started in the field when I was 48.None of us have a crystal ball on the future of IT but it would appear that the future will be better. By all means pursue your studies and see if your sone can help you get some experience under your belt.
I interviewed at several companies and many of them mentioned that they wanted my life experience and stability.
You see my son got me into IT also. I owned a bicycle shop for almost 20 years and was not especially computer literate when I got started.
