I Want A New Job

Stephanie Said:

I am getting drug tested for a new job and want to know how crazy they are about alcohol?

We Answered:

Disqualifying factors will be dictated by company policy. Regardless, if you want the job, don't drink the days leading up to the test.

Leslie Said:

How do I convince recrutiers that I want a job in a new locality instead on my current locality?

We Answered:

They do this because they think you want to be close to home and that's what you want to hear, once you go through basic, you will be assigned and you will probably have a better chance then of getting a job away from home.

I start a new job this week at a very corporate place i want to where can i get some cheap business clothes?

We Answered:

I agree with Molly.....a good suit will last you a long time and will take many dry cleanings. I would invest in a couple good suits....one black or navy and one neutral....like a camel color or perhaps a green tone if you look good in that. What you wear under that can be on the cheaper side.....look at JC Penny or Kohls. Also....don't skimp on the shoes....get some that are comfy and fit well. It is true...people look at shoes. Also, I would get the skirt and the pants with the suit that way you have some extra variety. Get a suit jacket that fits well, and that you can possibly mix and match with other pants or skirts....ex, A black jacket with a tweed or wool skirt. Go for quality, not quantity. Also...have them taylored if they don't fit...it's worth the extra money.

Need to find a new job, but I want to wait until after the store closes?

We Answered:

Just a few days ago I went into a Linen N Things and was surprised to hear that they are closing the doors shortly. I would suggest not waiting until the store closes, so be proactive with your job search. Some companies recruit and want persons to start right away. Some are proactive and are planning for when someone will leave (in the future), or are anticipating a surge in sales in the future & will need more staff then. I've see all cases in my recruiting career.

On the other hand with the job market as it is these days you would not want to pass up a permanent job opportunity for one that is short-lived. The competition is stiff in the job market now. Ultimately the choice is up to you but starting now will give you 11 weeks of a head start. If you have money saved that can afford you to chill for a while after L N T closes, and while you job hunt then go for it. If not, go ahead and start looking. Hope that helps!

I want to find a new job in reatil, What are some stores that will hire a 16 year old girl?

We Answered:

PLEASE LISTEN TO MY ADVICE....
I was in a similar situation in my teens, where I really wanted to work, but was very unsure who would hire me since I wasn't 18. Not that there's anything wrong w/ working in McDonalds a couple times a week after school as it is an honest buck, but I really wanted to do something differemt. Also, I had to work after school because I was responsible for contributing to my household in my teens. I went to apply at Nordsrtom department store and asked for a stock room position. With many department stores, you can go to a department and ask the manager if they are hiring good people like yourself. Dress nice and be confident. It was really a cool job (I got a discount on grat clothes and was treated with respect). I applied around the time they were going to have a big sale and they needed to hire people to help put out the merchadise and keep it nicely displayed. They liked me because I worked hard. Eventually they made me a sales person and I made great commission. If you're going to work retail, keep in mind it is always good to get a job that pays base+commision. If you apply at a Nordstrom, the Brass Plumb department would be great for you. If there's not a Nordstrom near you, then use the same tactic to get a job at Bloomingdale's, Macy's or another department store like that. The best thing about it was that I worked for a company that was very well-respected and known for great service. Whether or not you decide to go to college, it always helps later on as a young adult to have a great company on your application or resume. Later on, I did not have the money for college, but realized I was smart and hard-working, and deserved a good career as much as anyone.I applied for and got a job at the front desk of a nice hotel because they said they were very impressed that I had worked for a company like Norstrom whose reputation for great service is admired. I worked hard at the hotel and it became a very good career (I am now a manager in a luxury hotel). I can easily say that my first job in retail at a nice department store was a stepping stone to something much better. But keep in mind that now matter where you work, or what your age, always be responsible and reliable. Also, stay in school and don't let a job interfer with your grades. Knowledge is power.
