Late Career Change

Shelly Said:

Is it too late to change my career to be an Optometrist?

We Answered:

No problem whatsoever. 40 is not too old. 60 isn't even old (a lot of retirees go back to school for a year or two in order to CHANGE careers, not stop working completely).

Optometry is not really med school. Find a school near you, and start talking to the admissions counselors. They may suggest going to school at nights to take pre-reqs. Based on you performance, they may accept you.

Schools are looking for pasionate individuals for graduate school - age is an asset for this.

Is it too late for a career change?

We Answered:

It's NEVER too late. I'm 42 and let's see... I've changed careers 5 times now. I'm actually going to college right now to get another degree so I can change again. Maybe it's just me, but staying in one career my whole life would drive me insane. I couldn't handle just doing the same old thing my whole life. I enjoy variety and new experiences. And I've found that every time I've made a career change, my previous careers have given me an advantage in my new career, helping me to see things differently than people who had never done anything else.

You've done all the hard work for nursing. Best to finish it and get a degree. It is always an option you can take up if the other vocation doesn't work in the long run. Nursing can also provide you with the financial stability to help support you while pursuing that which is really and truly dear to your heart.

Chester Said:

Is it ever too late for a career change?

We Answered:

29 is not too old to go back to school. I changed careers when I was 32, and I never looked back. I did it again out of necessity in 2000, and I am still going strong. Now, at 52, I am selling my company because another little "sideline" business I am involved in has allowed me to sit back and not work so hard. So no, it's never too late to go back and start another career. Follow your dream and you will never be unhappy.
