Make Career Change

Wilma Said:

Best way to make a career change into paralegal?

We Answered:

You should get a certificate to teach you the ins and outs of handling a legal matter, and the basic principles involved. Best would be an ABA Approved school, or else a school that is a member of AAfPE.

What makes things confusing is that most states (California being a notable exception) have no regulation of who may be a paralegal; the selection of candidates is subject to the needs and requirements of the individual attorney doing the hiring.

Be aware, however, that earning a paralegal certificate makes you certificated, not certified. Certified Paralegals are those who have passed the exam offered by NALA (National Assn of Legal Assistants).

How can I make a career change to intelligence analysis?

Your experience and knowledge set should qualify you for a position in intelligence analysis. You should only be required to take a small set of specific course work related to this subject. An additional degree shouldn't be required.

How do you successfully make a career change?

We Answered:

What field do you want to enter? You don't say what you WANT to do, and that's a very important factor. With an engineering degree, you can do an 'add-on' and pick up a one-year teaching practicum and go into teaching. You can take a few MBA courses and go into management - there are tons of things you could do, but you have to first decide what you want to do. And if you want to stay with engineering but there raen't any jobs where you are - then go to where the jobs are. Life's too short to spend it doing something you aren't passionate about.
