I am thinking of making a career change in law enforcement any advice?

We Answered:

Hi! I can't help but wanted to say good luck!!!

My husband is seriously considering being a police officer when and if he loses his job in April (he most likely will). I am still kinda shocked by it b/c he went to do this once before but backed out. While looking for a job after getting out of the Army, he went and took the test, had the 2nd highest score, was about to leave to the police Academy and then BOOM... "I don't want a dangerous job anymore". I think he was still struggling w/ coming back from a war zone. I am curious to see if he will follow through this time. Anyway, rambling as always.... GOOD LUCK!!!

I am thinking of making a career change into sales...any advice?

We Answered:

REAL and PROFESSIONAL sales people do not need to resort to lying or manipulating to make a living these days. True sales professionals take on a consultative role these days. The successful ones take it to heart that they are helping the customers some how in some little way.

Sales Professionals are rated the #2 career path that has the potential of making over 6 figures. Basically, the harder you work, the more you make. If you want to give yourself a raise that week, you just bang out more customer calls and close more sales.

Sales is the HARDEST easy job you'll ever have, and yet, it'll be the EASIEST hard job you'll ever have.

There is a book out there called, "How I Raised Myself From Failure To Success in Sales". It's a short read but by far the best read for a starter sales person.

Tom Hopkins is an author for sales books which is a good starting point, but once you get more seasoned, you need to graduate from his stuff.

Sales could probably be the best thing you do for your career as long as you can withstand the initial "rejection" from the cold calling. However, there are plenty of other ways to get new leads aside from cold calling. Cold calling is proven to be the worst in attaining new leads. To attain new leads, there are other avenues such as networking events, referrals, mailers, email campaigns etc.

I've rambled on long enough, have fun and good luck!

Make sure you dont have any felonies, get into shape and get some test books from your local book stores to prepare you for the police exam. Go to your local uniform shop and get a pocket book called, "The Law Enforcement Pocket Manual" its usually 20 bucks and lays the law out in layman terms. It's like cliff notes and will help you understand alot if you havent taken any Criminal Justice courses. *Good Luck*

Seeking advice on making a career change.?

We Answered:

I think your social work experience and Master's degree will transfer well into anything that involves communication, problem solving, and conflict resolution.

This would be a good fit in Human Resources or Marketing (most reasonable transition). I think you should take some classes in Marketing or Human Resources and earn an certificate or something that validates your interest. But, since you already have a Masters degree, you may not have to do it. Just be sure to write down all your transferable skills on your resume when applying to positions in these fields. In writing, it may not be as easy a transfer unless you do a lot of report writing in your current job..which is possible for case reports. The arts is pretty difficult to transition since it would be a clear change and you would have to earn a Bachelors most likely in the Arts to change your career.

Best of luck.
