Teacher Change Career

Freddie Said:

Am I crazy to change from engineering sales career to a preschool teacher?

We Answered:

If you realize that your financial situation will be slightly different, but its' something that you love, why shouldn't you change?

Gwendolyn Said:

I need to change my career (teacher)?

We Answered:

With your background as a teacher you may want to consider training. It is good business, the pay and benefits are good but it may require you to travel unless you get with a company in a big metropolitan area.
You may not need extensive background in what you train, they have excellent course material. It is more about delivery of the subject matter.
Some ideas are Microsoft office software, english to foreign adults, any software product, internal/audit controls, project management

Lloyd Said:

I am a qualified teacher, I taught for 5 yrs, left'91 to pursue a career in banking, I need a change?

We Answered:

Education has changed so much in that time. You are a qualified teacher, but you may/may not be a highly-qualified teacher. You may have to take classes, earn CLU points, etc to become highly qualified. This is part of 'No child left behind.' All teachers must be highly qualified. If you're not-your job can be up in the air each year until you become so. That's something to consider. Also everything is done online now. I am a 1st grade teacher in Louisiana--roll call, lesson plans, and grade books are all done online. We also have to include as much technology into our lessons as possible. This is another thing to consider-are you computer savvy? I personally love teaching, but at times think I can't possibly do this forever because of the politics and behavior of the children. They can curse you and push you while they recieve no punishment for it. Kids aren't as innocent as they were 15 years ago. They know more about sex, drugs and alcohol than I do at 32!! I literally have to ask my friends what certain things mean! I'm not trying to dicourage you in any way-but I do want to let you know a little bit about how education is today. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Dora Said:

How does one go about a career change with a liberal arts degree? Tired of being a teacher...?

We Answered:

No you are not! A teacher myself, I have taken a different route and now write textbooks in the field I used to teach in. I just started this, so I am winging it, but looks promising. I don't know what you taught, but think of the many ways you can take that skill into the private sector somehow.

See the books "Where The Jobs Are" and "Second Careers" at the library. Full of great ideas and helpful resources.
