Too Old To Change Careers

Rosemary Said:

Am i too old to change careers ?

We Answered:

You're never too old to change careers. However, taking on more student loan in this kind of environment isn't the best idea either to be candid.

You should think about these things first:

1. Why do you want to change careers? Is there not enough openings in your current field? Are you burned out? Make sure your reasons for changing aren't just based around your *current* situation. That you really have a long-term desire for something more than what you have. You can always move to a better job market area (companies are REALLY needing people who are willing to relocate), and sometimes switching companies or taking on more challening tasks than cure burn out. Be sure you're switching for the right reasons

2. Are you sure you want to be a nurse? Is it going to be work the extra school work? Do you know how many hours a nurse puts into the job; the hours, the responsibilities, the challenges? I'd suggest talking to a lot of nurses first. Ask them what they love and hate about their jobs.

If you really want something in the medical field, but don't want to spend the money for school, become a medical assistant instead! They do require training, but the school is half the time and half as cheep. And you don't have to deal with urine and blood all day either! Medical transcriptionists and medical assistants are in huge demand right now. So think carefully before you switch careers!

I'd recommend looking at your budget. If you're already deep in debt, going back to school to switch careers won't helo you. Use your computer science degree first! Computer careers are hot and pay well. Reduce some of that debt first and then go back to college.

You still have plenty of time! You're never too old to change your life. I read about a man who just got his MBA...and he was ninety-six!!!

Am I too old to change careers from sea fisheries to land surveyor, I'm 39...?

We Answered:

I was a land surveyor before I retired five years ago and when i retired I saw the handwriting on the wall. The job opportunities for a land surveyor are few as the slowdown in new construction has made big dent in the entire construction industry which includes building new subdivisions and roads. You are not too old, although you will need to learn the new technology that is being used which involves the use of laser technology to measure distance and surveying instruments that record the distances measured and the angles turned that can be directly connected to a computer so one can make a drawing from the points that are shown on a computer screen and calculations can be made using computer programs. There is a leaning curve that takes intelligence, time and the willingness to learn all one can about surveying and how surveying is used with computers. Were you not trained on computers at this point in your life it is often very difficult to learn and takes more time than it would were you younger as younger brains learn easier. The retraining will take time and you may be able to find a course in surveying technology at a community college and secure an associate in arts degree in surveying technology. You will need to know trigonometry and how to use trigonometry in surveying. This may be difficult were you to not have taken any trigonometry in high school or college. In my opinion you may be unemployable after retraining were you to pursue a career as a land surveyor as you may find there are very few jobs for a land surveyor. It appears you want to get out of the sea fisheries work. I suggest you try and find a job that is year round and has benefits, including medical benefits. I suggest you try and get a job as a bagger at a Safeway store. Safeway will train employees to become checkers, managers of departments, assistant store managers and store managers. My son started with Safeway fourteen years ago as a bagger and they trained him to be a checker, then he became manager of the bakery department, then manager of the vegetable department, and is now manager of the frozen food department. He is in training to become an assistant store manager and eventually a store manager. He receives good and steady pay and good medical benefits. In other words, he has made Safeway his career and he is happy working for Safeway and likes his fellow workers and they like him. As a father, I couldn't ask for more as he only has a high school education and it makes me feel good that he has a steady job, good pay and a steady paycheck. I think it is wise to pick a career that won't go out of style, and people need groceries, so a job in the grocery business is a wise choice. There are other jobs that won't go out of style and those jobs are jobs in businesses that provide a service that people need on a continual basis and aren't affected by such an effect as there being an extreme cut back in construction jobs due to a failing economy. I enjoyed my 36 years as a land surveyor, but those days are gone and were one to be a land surveyor, the chance of working full time is almost impossible. I wish you the best in whatever you do and I hope you find a job that will give you a steady income, good pay and benefits, and job security.

Is 40 too old to change careers just because you're bored, and how does one go about it?

We Answered:

No, not at all. I am 39 and I hv changed career thrice and all the time with grand success. It is all on a person's judiciousness about time and money management.

Discuss It!
