Article - "The depths of Male Disposability"?

We Answered:

The most telling thing is the fact that men also see these jobs as male power and pride. This provides a useful clue not just about male disposability but about health problems and social control of men as well. For example in health issue we see the idea that women suffer more depression than men. But if you scratch a little deeper than those reports you find a lot of male suicide. Showing that men would rather not express their emotions. They pride themselves in not expressing. But just behind that pride lurks the shame of expressing feelings even at breaking point. That pride threads all the way through mens health and even silences and traps them from properly getting medical care.
Unlike Stefanie and, I think, the author(but im not too sure) I don't think its universally right. It can be quite sinister. Using the framework of being a man we can set the agenda of how men think about war, drug dealing, working conditions and corporate activities. That is, men can be transformed into cannon fodder, thats not protecting women or children but feathering the nests of the state or corporation against their own interests). Thats the sinister thing about all gender. Masculinity and feminity can be amoral and uncritical.
Also its not as relevant as it once was. Its become a bit like other cultural and moral constructs from the past: a bit random nowadays and not rational. The worst case of this is the decay of the industrial working class in the west and its devastating affect in inner cities, and especially the poor disenchanted you men it produced that make up the modern underclass.
Having said this. Its not mens fault of course. Like women they are socialised into thinking this way. Men and women police and enforce this way of thinking. Men and women poke fun at men that act in other ways reinforcing the shame. Everyone knows the classic example of shaming conscientious objectors. This is probably why we have Gay Pride to counter gay shame.

Edit: Thats interesting and I think that these aren't necessarily seperate. Total reliance on aggression and assertiveness as a response can be seen as something like fruedian sublimation where emotions are displaced as a defence mechanism. So with social facts like 'boys don't cry' but also without the vocabulary to express sadness/depression this is where the energy and feeling go. Its yet another when that it remains unspoken so we can see here how it remained undiscovered.

Aidan, not Aiden

A Question of Puberty: Is it here? Is it done? Is it slow? Is something wrong?

We Answered:

Your parents may have been very detrimental to your growth as a person in this area. If any act sexually was received with a negative reaction, or if you were brought up that sex was immoral, then you probably have a lot of repressed sexual tension that you need to deal with. You may want to try finding a sexual therapist or someone that you can talk to about this who may be able to shed more light on it.
Just because you aren't experimenting with sex, though doesn't make you weird though. You should get this all figured out though before you miss out of relationships all together, though.

Good luck!
