Career Change Advice

Lucy Said:

I am considering a career change into photography- Any advice?

We Answered:

Well, it is really only a job for those who can be completely dedicated to it. It is very hard to make a living at it because of the enormous competition from very talented professionals. It is unfortunate, but the great majority of work is monopolized by a few. This does not mean that you can not be successful, but it does mean that you are going to have to be as dedicated to the business end of photography as the skill end.

This means constantly marketing yourself. Constantly meeting people and networking. Constantly looking for new ways to get your stuff out there. I do okay, but to do that one well paying gig, It seems like I do 50 low paying/no paying ones for it.

If you have the talent and the determination though, its a great profession. I think most people prefer to be semi pros so as they do not have to rely upon it as their sole means of income. Its a lot less stressful that way.

Career change advice >> Freelance copywriting service?

We Answered:

Check out odesk.com and Craigslist. It is difficult at the start but you need to take what you can get and then use word of mouth from the clients you do get to recommend you. Having a good portfolio and some references will help you get started.

I'm a registered midwife and i'm looking for a career change into sexual health. Any advice how to do this?

We Answered:

I have also been looking into this. According to the NMC we are qualified to undertake this kind of work, it is up to the employer if they wish us to undertake extra training. I wonder how much could be learnt "on the job"? I have been advised to look at www.bashh.org.uk and perhaps undertake some study through them.

Where are you based? Might be interesting to speak to each other. info@3shiresmidwife.co.uk
