Career Coaching Services

Angela Said:

What type of job should I take to jump start my career as a life coach (w/o a degree)?

We Answered:

I think a great starting point is a personal trainer. That helps people. While working in that field I would look into life coach training. See if your state has any requirements or licenses for that work (check your local community college). If not, you can find plenty of educational opportunities online.

Would a career coach help?

We Answered:

I suppose that a career coach is sort of like chicken soup--it can't hurt. If
you decide to go that route, ask tons of questions, get viable references,
determine an upfront course of action, get a written agreement. This may
sound weird, but contact some local or regional historical societies and
tell them you'll even take a job as a janitor to work for them. Chances are
one or more organizations may refer you to someone who is hiring.

Has anyone heard of or experienced Career direct UK before?

We Answered:

Careerdirectuk.com was registered by James Martin who owned mycareeruk.net which was a scam so it's very likely that career direct uk is also a scam. The 'business model' appears to be the same.

How would you look for career fulfillment?

We Answered:

Yes.

1. Mainly money - I couldn't afford to take a paycut to start at the bottom in a different career, and I can't really afford to fund further study. I'm aware that there are ways around this such as loans, but I'm not prepared to take on a student loan at a point in my life where I should really be taking on a mortgage.

2. To be honest, I would not really look to any kind of professional help. I would talk to friends and relatives firstly. I might use websites if they were free to access. I would also use books and magazines from the library.

3. I would be more inclined to want practical help - e.g. suggestions of what careers might be good, how to get into them, etc.

4. As said before, I probably wouldn't be interested in professional help.

5. Practical.

Deborah Said:

Are "career coaches" worth the money?

We Answered:

Tread very carefully in this market.

There is definitely some value to having help with your carerr and I would say paying by the hour is a more safe way to guage it then to pay for a package deal. Especially the thousands of dollars offered by some of the big name firms out there.

If someone is willing to coach you for 75 an hour, maybe you can agree to get two hours at a reduce rate. If you don't feel you are getting any benefit then you are only out 150 bucks and you can write it off as job hunting expense.

Before working with any of the big firms, check out www.ripoffreport.com to see if they have had any problems.
