Career Development Advice

Mattie Said:

Career advice: web design or web development?

We Answered:

I think you answered your own questions,.

1) should you be a web designer? From you, "I am not a visual, artistic person and I don't have a lot of creativity"
Answer, No.

2) should you be a web developer? From you, "Are there female web developers out there? Will web dev. be too hard for me?"
Answer, of course there are female web developers. But if you don't think you have anything in common with them, then perhaps you aren't best suited for that either.

I would take a career aptitude test to find out your strengths and weaknesses. You want to find something that you enjoy, not just that pays you the most money. Here's a list of them from Google.

Help.... I need career advice! Heres's my story, I was in web development for 3 years...?

You can put your admin skills under an interest/skills section on your resume and if you are applying to an admin job, you can use it to fill a cover letter: Years of experience doing all this cool web stuff so I can really help your company there AND I also am able to type a kazillion wpm and use ten key with my toes. Brag on the cover letter.

Don't give up, you just need to find your home. I bet if you focused on finding an admin spot - maybe at an exec level so you could get more cash - you could wiggle your way into doing web work too. Think about places like law offices, doctor's offices, etc that need the strong admin skills but also need a web presence...I would start there.

Good Luck!
