Career Development Assessment

Glenn Said:

I am not sure that I want to be a teacher. What should I do?

We Answered:

Hi Weird,
About 50% of new teachers leave the profession within the first five years. So you're not alone in being unhappy. I'm glad you're addressing this issue because unhappy/burned out teachers aren't what we want in the classroom. Students don't benefit from that. If you do, in fact, have a supportive administration and a smart, supportive staff, why not talk your situation over with a couple of them. I've found the single best way to cope with your kind of problem is having a teaching mentor. That could be an older, more experienced teacher or perhaps your principal. There may be ways you can get some support in areas such as class management and dealing with parents to improve your day-to-day circumstances. In the meantime, you might check into graduate work toward a masters degree in curriculum development or administration. A relatively new and interesting area is educational technology. With an advanced degree you may be able to gain employment at a community college or university working on curriculum development and technology. Such credentials can also apply throughout public school districts. There are computer labs/language labs, etc. in virtually every school system now as well as a need for experts to help teachers and students use the hardware and software. Something to consider. Best wishes.
