Why do ideas of animism occur in some adults?

We Answered:

I'm sure you yourself find some of these episodes comical.
Plenty of people believe in animism without being children - there are entire areas of the world where people are animists. It may in fact be the earliest religion.
And what is life anyway? Science doesn't know the answer to this. They give it a fivefold description: life eats, excretes waste, moves in some manner, reproduces and respires. But this is only a description, not an explanation.
I strongly feel that trees have a personality of sorts - I talk to trees and I can feel them responding. They don't speak to me, but when I praise them I can feel them swelling with pride and gratitude.
The land speaks to me.
There aren't any objects in the real sense anyway, since all objects are tightly woven bundles of energy and space. This argument I know is a little weak because there is a lot of debate over the nature of atoms. Nevertheless animism is just a way of looking at the world.
As for your very emotional reactions, this is the unusual part. Use some reasoning when picking a shirt - it's a manufactured product and probably has absolutely no preference for who is going to wear it. If you don't buy it, somebody else probably will. In any case the shirt is doing what shirts do, that is, being a shirt.
The same is true for automobiles.
Your sense of pity has run wild. It is good to have a sense of pity, but it is also good to reign it in. You can learn to do this by yourself, but a therapist could help too.
With respect,
Gavin

how much to charge for a wordpress website?

We Answered:

I agree with the other answers that Wordpress is a great platform for basic websites. I run a web development firm, and I do 30% of my sites in Wordpress, 60% in Drupal, and 10% custom code or another CMS.

You need to be prepared to sell your customers on an open-source CMS, but that should not be tough. There are a lot of good blog posts out there about the advantages of an open-source CMS rather than custom coding.

The value to your client of having a website that is very well-supported by the open source community (free themes, free plug-ins, cheaper and more widely available developers and designers) might actually mean you could charge more for a Wordpress-based site than for a custom-coded site that they can't modify easily.

For a really well-developed Wordpress site, there is still a good bit of coding to do--customizing themes, writing custom plugins, etc. You shouldn't be afraid to charge $2,000+ for a basic site not including custom graphic design.
