Career Development Grant

Priscilla Said:

I am 34, full-time student, parent of two kids, what benefits, tax credits, income support etc can I get?

We Answered:

To " Penelope Pitstop!"
How can she get a job???
she is a FULL time student so hours may be 9-5, then she has to look after her children in the evening, then do her courswork.
Also if she were to get a job, then hire a nanny to care for her kids, the wages she would earn from that part time job would be eaten up by paying the nanny in the first place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My younger sister's step mum was in the same situation about 6 years ago so I know what they have to go through.
This is the conundrum that many parents face inclduding two parent families!
when i have kids, it will be the same for me and my hubby!
both work then have to pay out almost a weeks wages on that very childcare that allowes us to work, or one stay at home!
The system wants parents at work and not at home on benefits but the very system that is supposed to help doesn't!
Sometimes your better off on benefits!
They take everything away when you go to full time work!
So please don't judge when you may know nothing about this woman! She is doing a great job and its bloody hard to go back to full time education!!!!
Everyone's answer these days, is to " get a job"
yes and when she graduates she may have a better pay scale and will have a better job to go to and won't need to have benefits!

jesus give the woman a break!

To the Questioner! :)
As others have pointed out, it's best to phone the jobcentre .
There are alot of people who are actually are entitled to help but don't think they will qualify and therefore never ask!
it's no harm in trying and good on you for studying! :0)

What would be some logical wise next steps in recovering from a huge career/life mistake?

We Answered:

It's not too late to get out of a field that you don't like and get into one you do like! Your grant seems like a great way to get back into school and find something that you'd like to do. Try meeting with an advisor at the school(s) you'd like to go to and discussing with that person how much would be involved in studying for different degrees -- you might find that you can transfer some of your previous work. Also, don't worry about being too old or whatever; lots of people do this all the time. Your life experience and maturity will help you to be more diligent and give you a good perspective on your studies.

I hope you find something you really enjoy!
