A generalist gives you the flexibility to a wider playing field, whereas the others put you in a box. Pay depends on the companies that you work for, typically larger companies would pay you more but advancement can be slow. Smaller companies would give you a broader experience, but can become stagnated.

Also, if you become a generalist, you can always continue studies to specialize in another area that you think would then bemore beneficial to you (by then you would have the experiences of being in the HR field and know where you shoudl specialize in.)
