It's disappointing. The only bad race the horse ran this year was the Preakness and I think he could have matured into a pretty good horse in the Classic. I'm not sure that he could have beaten the top older horses such as Einstein or Rail Trip or Life is Sweet... I'm not sure he could even beat the 3 year old filly Rachel Alexandra. But Pioneer was definately the top 3 year old colt on the west coast and that loss to racing is disappointing.

Of course it's good that the connections retired him rather than letting him hurt himself worse... and he'd miss too much training time to be able to come back by the fall, so he wouldn't be the top of his game in the Breeders, so retiring him was the right decision if they didn't have plans to race him past his 3 year old year. But it's bad when any horse has any type of injury and it's bad for racing when star horses have to be retired.
