Career Development Planning

Troy Said:

discuss the role of personal development planning in your own personal and career development?

We Answered:

As an educator personal development planning comes in the form of a personal mission statement. Corporations have mission statements but having a personal mission statement that needs to be updated every year allows you to "see" where you have been where you want to go and how you are planning to get there. As a classroom teacher this has allowed me to see that I needed to become more proficient in the design of curriculum for our students which led to my obtaining a master's degree in curriculum planning and leads me to my future goal of becoming a district wide planner of curriculum for our school district. Start with a personal mission plan reflect on it every year, and update it every year and it will lead you to your true path.

what is career planning and development?

We Answered:

Career planning is taking a look at where you are and where you would like to be in a year, 5 years, etc. from now. Then you look at what it would take to get your there.

Career development is taking the skills that you have and using them to build on. Whether its taking classes, learning a new program, or just getting organized; you learn from your surroundings and make yourself a better person from it.

What is the rationale of career development plan?

We Answered:

There are many ideas behind the career development plan.
It is primarily to encourage employees to think long-term about their development and training needs, and where they would like to be within the company at some future time. Obviously this helps the company in instilling a sense of belonging and loyalty among staff, as well as in planning the company training needs to best support their staff.
It helps a member of staff identify their strengths as well as aims, and encourages a responsible company to utilise those strengths and desires to the fullest. It also helps to diagnose dissatisfaction amongst individuals and put together a plan to rectify the situation speedily, whereas without the carreer development process the potentially unhappy employee might only be spotted as they give their notice to quit!
